An ICC profile describes a defined printing condition; it is not a universal color correction file. Substrate shade, coating, ink set, resolution, screening, curing or drying and measurement method all influence the result. Reusing a profile after a material change may produce avoidable color and ink-limit problems.
Color management should begin only after the printer is mechanically and chemically stable. A profile cannot repair nozzle loss, contaminated optics, inconsistent media transport or uncontrolled curing.

Define the printing condition
X-Rite documentation describes a printer profile in relation to a particular output resolution, ink and paper stock. Name the condition accordingly; a filename such as “paper-cups-final” is too vague to control later use.
Record printer, ink set, substrate supplier and grade, coating side, mode, resolution, curing settings, measurement device and profile date. If any critical item changes, evaluate whether recalibration or reprofiling is required.
Stabilize before measuring
Complete approved maintenance and print a nozzle or jetting diagnostic. Confirm alignment, feed and curing stability. Condition paper consistently and print targets in the same orientation and mode intended for production.
Allow the target to dry or cure under a defined process before measurement. Measuring immediately on one day and after extended conditioning on another makes profile comparisons unreliable.
Separate calibration from profiling
Calibration or linearization brings the device to a repeatable baseline; profiling describes the color behavior of that baseline. Do not build a new profile for every transient fault. Restore the device first and verify repeatability across more than one target.
Set total ink and channel limits through the approved workflow to avoid wet, poorly cured or distorted paper. A visually darker patch is not proof of a usable production condition.
Approve both color and converting behavior
Evaluate measured color together with drying, rub resistance, odor controls defined by the factory, paper flatness and downstream forming. A visually accurate sheet that cannot feed or form consistently is not an approved condition.
Use a signed physical proof under defined lighting. A monitor view is useful for soft proofing only when the display and workflow are controlled; it does not replace the production sample.
Maintain a controlled profile library
Store profiles with read-only master copies, clear naming, creation notes and approved workflow settings. Prevent operators from selecting similarly named files without knowing the substrate and mode. Archive superseded profiles rather than silently overwriting them.
