Digital Printing Printhead Height Guide

Set digital printing machine printhead height from real media thickness, flatness, transport and alignment evidence while preventing media strikes.

The distance between printhead and media affects both strike risk and drop placement. Curled, lifted or incorrectly supported material can contact the head even when nominal thickness is unchanged; an unnecessarily large gap can reduce registration and image sharpness.

The correct gap and height method are printer-specific. Use the installed printer manual and its registered media settings. This guide avoids publishing one universal dimension and focuses on measuring the real media condition before adjustment.

Inspect the actual media envelope

Measure or gauge the thickest approved area, not only supplier nominal thickness. Inspect curl, bent corners, overlap, dust, adhesive lift and deformation after conditioning. Mark machine direction and the location of any previous strike.

A paper blank or formed product can move under vacuum, acceleration or heat. Test the intended support and loading method. Do not press material flat by hand near a moving head or disable height detection to accept an unstable sample.

Stabilize support and transport first

Confirm platen cleanliness, vacuum or fixture condition, roller pressure and leading-edge presentation. Remove debris using the printer procedure. A raised fiber or scrap can create an isolated strike that height adjustment will not solve.

Apply the model-specific height method

Select the correct registered media entry and follow automatic detection or manual setting specified for the machine. Record the previous value before changes. If a jig is used, control its datum and media seating.

Do not copy a numeric setting from another printer or substrate. An unnecessarily wide gap can reduce image quality, while a narrow gap increases strike risk. Keep any interlocks and height sensors active unless an approved service procedure states otherwise.

Recheck nozzles, alignment and feed

Run the approved nozzle check before judging alignment so missing nozzles do not appear as a height problem. After a height or gap change, perform the printer’s head alignment and feed adjustment with the actual production media where required.

Evaluate fine text, edges, bidirectional registration, banding and color patches. Compare with a controlled reference under the same print mode, profile, ink and curing condition. Change one factor at a time.

Validate strike prevention across a batch

Begin with controlled low-risk trials and inspect the media path and print after each sample. Then sample across the approved material lot and production sequence, watching for curl growth, debris and loading variation. Stop immediately for contact, unusual noise or ink smearing.
