Paper Cup Carton Drop Damage Mapping

Plan a paper cup carton drop test with the correct packaged-product procedure, controlled orientation and mapped internal damage before changing pack design.

A paper cup carton drop test evaluates the packaged product, including cups, bags, carton, closures and internal arrangement. Looking only at the outer carton can miss crushed rims, shifted stacks or bag damage. Orientation and pre-existing condition must be controlled before impact.

Define the complete packaged product

Record cup SKU, stack count, bag construction, carton specification, closure, separators and arrangement. Mark carton faces, edges and corners using the selected procedure. Prepare untested representative packages and document any permitted substitutes.

Protect and inspect specimens before testing

Control orientation and execute the procedure

Follow the complete ordered sequence where the procedure combines conditioning, vibration, compression or shock. Map internal damage before unpacking evidence is lost

Open the carton using a controlled sequence. Photograph each layer and keep bags, stacks and cup positions linked to the original map. Inspect rim deformation, sidewall creases, base damage, stack shift, blocking and bag failure using agreed criteria.

Report denominators and severity by location. An undamaged outer carton does not prove the cups passed, and one cosmetic mark does not automatically mean functional failure. Compare damage concentration with impact orientation and internal load paths. Run separate lid, leak or denesting tests where the failure definition requires them.

Control changes and retesting decisions

Review a confirmed pattern with packaging, product and packing-equipment specialists. A change to cup count, bag tension, carton material, closure or arrangement creates a different packaged product. ISTA notes that changes potentially affecting performance can require retesting.

Build new representative specimens and repeat the agreed method.
