Paper cup defect Pareto analysis ranks categories so limited investigation resources can focus on substantial losses. A chart becomes misleading when definitions change, denominators are missing, one cup is counted several times or high-severity defects disappear behind a low count.

Define stable and mutually usable categories

Create defect definitions tied to approved visual references and measurement criteria. Separate observable symptom from suspected cause: a leaking cup is an outcome, while side-seam contamination is one possible mechanism. Train inspectors and control category revisions.

Avoid slicing data until a dramatic pattern appears. Preselect factors using process knowledge, and preserve results that do not support the preferred explanation. A difference between shifts may originate from product mix, inspection practice or material timing rather than operator performance.

Verify action with the same definitions

After an authorized action, collect new data using unchanged categories, denominators and inspection opportunity. Compare the targeted defect and total risk, including any category that increased. Confirm persistence across representative production.
