Define roles and task boundaries

List tasks by machine zone and discipline: inspection, adjustment, mechanical replacement, pneumatics, heating, sensors, drives, PLC or safety systems. State which tasks require supervision, specialist approval or supplier support. Define who may diagnose, change, test and release.

Avoid one broad “qualified technician” label. Competence for replacing a standard bearing does not prove competence to edit motion parameters. Make limits visible in work assignment and access control.

Teach controlled technical information

Use current manuals, drawings, parts lists, software backups, torque or setup instructions and site procedures. Explain product-quality effects as well as machine function. Include evidence preservation, configuration records and when to stop and escalate.

Retire obsolete training material. Translate or illustrate critical steps where needed without removing technical meaning. Supplier instruction supports training, but the employer retains responsibility for task authorization and safe work systems.

Assess knowledge and observed work

Check understanding of hazards, isolation, component identity, measurement, tolerances, failure evidence and restoration. Observe a representative task using the correct tools and documentation. Include an abnormal condition that requires escalation rather than improvisation.

Assess the record produced, not only physical execution. A technically correct repair without parts identity or verification evidence creates future risk. Record gaps and retraining before independent authorization.

Verify diagnostic reasoning

Use controlled scenarios with similar symptoms from different mechanisms. Ask the technician to plan safe tests, interpret results and revise the hypothesis. Reward evidence-based isolation rather than rapid component substitution.

Do not disclose the expected answer during assessment. Retain the decision path and measurements. Diagnosis should recognize measurement uncertainty, intermittent conditions and product-process interactions where relevant.

Maintain and reassess competence

Set review based on task frequency, risk and technology change. Trigger reassessment after long absence, major machine modification, repeated documentation gaps, unsafe behavior or ineffective repairs. Monitor work quality and repeat failures without relying on repair speed alone.
